Leadership as a woman...

If you're like me, you've probably noticed how the conversation around, women in leadership has been buzzing lately. But let's be real for a second: Even though we've made some strides (yay for us!), the road to leadership is still riddled with potholes and speed bumps for many women. After 25+ years in the HR game, let me tell you, I've seen it all. So, what's the 411? Why do some of us find it hard to break that glass ceiling? Here's my take, sprinkled with a bit of friendly advice.

1. That Old Chestnut: Gender Bias 🌰

Can we just admit that the playing field isn't always level? I mean, I've sat in meetings where it felt like I was invisible! The data backs this up too. Studies reveal that men are often perceived as better-suited leaders, even when the ladies have the same skills. Wild, right?

My Quarter: Skill up, and show up. Continuous learning is your best friend. Also, find your workplace squad—those amazing folks who'll cheer for you and amplify your voice. Trust me, it helps to have allies when you're navigating the maze of corporate biases.

2. Where My Girls At? The Role Model Dilemma 👀

Look around your company's executive floor. How many women do you see? Not having enough women to look up to can be downright discouraging. We're talking just 8% of S&P 500 CEOs being women, people!

My Dime: If there's no role model at your workplace, seek inspiration elsewhere. I've personally found a lot of motivation from reading memoirs of successful women. Podcasts are also a goldmine. You'd be amazed at how much you can learn from people you've never even met.

3. The Juggling Act: Work-Life Balance 🤹‍♀️

Ah, the eternal struggle. Many of us are not just career women but also caregivers, chauffeurs, chefs—you name it. No wonder it's tough to invest 100% in our professional lives.

My Two Cents: Advocate for a work-life balance that suits you. I've seen the difference a flexible schedule can make. Be vocal about your needs, whether it's remote work or a more accommodating schedule. It's 2023, and it's about time we all get with the program!

4. Breaking Stereotypes Like It's Our Job 💪

So many preconceptions exist about what leaders should look like or how they should behave. And let's be honest, these don't usually align with society's expectations of women.

My Half Dollar: When you hear a stereotype, tackle it head-on. I've had my share of awkward moments, but speaking out can be so empowering. Own your achievements, and don't shy away from sharing them. Your confidence will set the stage for others to follow.

5. The Networking Gap 🌐

Networking—often easier said than done. Sometimes, it feels like we're not even in the same room where opportunities are being handed out.

My Two Dollar Bill: Go out there and network like a pro. Attend industry events, join online communities, or get into volunteering. When I was just starting out, my first major career opportunity came from a chance encounter at a conference. So, you never know!

Okay, let's wrap this up! Ladies, we've got hurdles to jump, but knowing what those hurdles are is half the battle. And organizations, you're not off the hook either! Let's all do our part to make the workplace an equal, awesome space for everyone. Because, believe me, when women rise, we all rise.
